Abstract:

This dataset reports the response of carbon black emulsions to various surfactant concentrations. Octane-in-water emulsions were exposed to anionic, nonionic, and cationic surfactant solutions of various concentrations. This dataset reports the zeta potentials for these particles after the introduction of various surfactant concentrations.

Methods:

Surfactant concentrations before soluntion: 97% SOS, 98% SDS, 98% OTAB, 98% DTAB, Triton X-100 Surfactant solutions made using water from Millipore Milli Q System Carbon Black dispersion: 0.015 wt %, zeta potential -613 mV, adjusted to 3.2 with HCl (37 wt %), at this pH zeta potential is -10.2 mV Base emulsion: 0.2 mL octane (99%) was added to 2 mL of carbon black particle dispersion, was vortexed 3000 rpm for 2 min Surfactant solutions: pH 3.2; varied between 0.1 mM to above the critical micelle concentrations (CMC) SDS, CMC = 8.2 mM; SOS, CMC = 130 mM; DTAB, CMC = 15.2 mM; OTAB, CMC = 140 mM; Triton X-100, CMC = approx. 0.4 mM After surfactant was added, solutions left at 25 degrees Celcius for 24 hrs 20 uL of emulsion was placed between two glass slides and 5 uL of surfactant was dropped between the slides Solutions were observed under Nikon Eclipse TE2000 inverted microscope Image analysis using Tool 3.0 to obtain drop sizes Confocal fluorescence microscopy using Rhodamine B carbon black particles Pendant drop experiments utilized KRUSS Easy Drop FM 40goniometer Zeta potentials measured by Malvern Zetasizer Nano-ZS
