Abstract:

This dataset examined the growth of Alcanivorax borkumensis when exposed to a marine broth with and without octane and a carbon free broth with and without octane. Growth was also examined on differently sized interfaces. In some cases the initial bacterial cell concentration varied. This dataset reports the cell concentration over time for the various treatments. It also reports the standard deviation, % error, exponential phase growth, doubling time, live cell intensity and absorbance.

Methods:

BD Difco 2216 (marine broth solution) was added to deionized water, concentration 37.4 g/L with 2 g/L KNO3 Solution above was mixed and boiled for 1 min and autoclaved at 121 degrees Celcius for 40 min Marine broth without organic nitrogen: 19.45 g/L NaCl, 5.9 g/L MgCl2, 3.24 g/L MgSO4, 1.8 g/L CaCl2, 0.55 g/L KCl, 2 g/L KNO3 and 0.126 g/L HK2O4P A. borkumensis was added to 3.5-7 mL of the broth, was cultured on a shaker plate at 30 degrees Celcius, 500 uL of solution was stained and read using a PHERAstar Plus microplate reader. Readings were converted to live cell concentrations. This was repeated at each time point.
