Abstract:

Larval blue crabs dispersal was simulated from known larval settlement locations to estimate larval release locations. Model output generated by the particle tracking model using flow fields from the Naval Research Lab’s Northern Gulf of Mexico Nowcast-Forecast System (NGOMNFS) model. Particles were modeled backward in time from Grand Isle, Louisiana (GRA); Ocean Springs, Mississippi (OCE); Dauphin Island, Alabama (DAU); and Pensacola, Florida (PEN). The data contain the settlement site, date tracking began, and the geographic coordinates of the simulated larval release site.

Purpose:

Larval release locations were estimated to better understand the connectivity of larvae across the northern Gulf of Mexico.

Data Parameters and Units:

Line number, Settlement Site [DAU, GRA, OCE, PEN], Settlement Site [Dauphin Island, Grand Isle, Ocean Springs, Pensacola], Date_Start (date of settlement, [MM/DD/YYYY]), EndLon (estimated release longitude, [decimal degrees]), EndLat (estimated release latitude, [decimal degrees]).

Methods:

Sea surface height, sea surface temperature, wind data, bathymetry, and river flow are used by NGOMNFS to produce hourly estimates of velocity vectors, salinity, and temperature on a 1.9 km x 1.9 km grid from western Louisiana to western Florida. 10,000 particles were released at each of the four settlement locations every week during the spawning season; the particles were spread evening in a 25 km diameter circle centered at the settlement site. The location of each particle was recalculated every hour and recorded every 24 hours for 45 days. After day 27, larvae are considered old enough to successfully settle, and the location is considered a viable release site if it is near a viable salinity and depth.
