Abstract:

This study experimentally investigated the effects of lower pH on larval and juvenile blue crabs, Callinectes sapidus, through laboratory experiments. We used a lowered pH of 7.8; the average surface ocean pH predicted by 2100 by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, compared to a control pH of 8.2. Size and mortality were recorded as well as intermolt duration and hardness for the juveniles.

Purpose:

The data were collected to determine effects of ocean acidification on blue crabs.

Larvae: experiment number, tank number, treatment (OA - pH 7.8, CONTROL - pH 8.2), carapace length (micrometer); Juveniles: crab ID, treatment (low - pH 7.8, control - pH 8.2), tank, crab length (mm), crab weight (g), time to molt (days between molts), molted carapace length (mm), molted carapace weight (g), hardness (n, the scratch hardness as measured by a sclerometer)
