Abstract:

We measured the advancing and receding contact angles around spherical particles at an air-water interface. We varied the shape of the air-water interface (especially deviatoric curvature) and found that the receding contact angle can be substantially lower when the interface has a cylindrical or saddle-like shape, compared to a planar shape.

Purpose:

We seek understand the contact angle between a solid particle and a fluid interface. This contact angle determines the binding energy of the particle at the interface (and many other properties as well). In particular, we asked whether the angle depends on the interface shape.

Data Parameters and Units:

Angles were reported in degrees, and particle diameters and contact-line shapes are given in mm. Typical particle sizes are mm.

Methods:

Direct imaging of the shape of the contact line, angle, and interface shape.

Instruments:

Optical imaging by digital camera.

Error Analysis:

Standard methods were used for error analysis. Estimates of measurement error were mainly from image analysis as described in the original article.
