Abstract:

This dataset reports contact angle, interfacial tension, adhesion, and aggregated volume for various hydrophobic compounds. Compound drops were placed on a quartz crystal surface which was then immersed in salt water (34 g/L). After adding quartz sand to dyed hydrophobic compounds in salt water, aggregated globules were counted and measured to estimate aggregated volume.

Purpose:

To observe hydrophobic compound properties when placed on a quartz surface and immersed in salt water.

Methods:

A 5 mL graduated pipet was used to drop compounds onto 45 mm x 25 mm x 25 mm quartz crystal. Angle measurements were obtained with ImageJ 1.48v software. 1 g of Quartz sand was added to the top of slick (0.5 mL of dyed hydrophobic compound in 100 mL salt water) for aggregate experiments, the number of aggregates were counted. Aggregate volumes were estimated using number of aggregates and diameter of aggregates.
