Abstract:

This is a lab experiment. The dataset includes the laboratory data and also typical experimental data summarized in excel. The data shows how layers of bubbles can damp the oscillation in a container. This data supports the paper Suaret, A. et al. 2015 Damping of liquid sloshing by foams. Purpose:

When a container is set in motion, the free surface of the liquid starts to oscillate or slosh. However, beer does no slosh as readily as water, which suggests that foam could be used to damp sloshing. In this work, we study experimentally the effect on sloshing of a liquid foam placed on top of a liquid bath.

Data Parameters and Units:

The units are contained in the excel files for each figure. Here is an example when there is a spreadsheet for fig 2a. The column headings show that unit parameters, including the frequency (f, 1/s) and the power at each frequency. f = frequency (s^-1), f_1 = first resonant frequency (s^-1), P(f) = temporal spectrum of free surface displacement, t = time (seconds), eta = time evolution of the free surface, X = motion of container (mm), xaxis = rescaling parameter sqrt(2 pi f nu)*(1/L+1/w) where L and w are the Length and Width of the container, respectively (s^-1), gamma_l (s-1) = damping coefficient (S^-1), nu = kinematic viscosity nu (mm^2.s^-1), fit_f_1 (s^-1) = Theoretical first resonant frequency (s^-1), xi = number of layers of foam, 1/tau = damping coefficient (s^-1), z/xi = rescaled vertical position in the foam, v_b/v_0(max) = rescaled mean velocity of the bubbles, v_0/(X*f_1) = rescaled maximum value of the mean velocity of the bubbles, x/tau_f= rescaled damping coefficent (cm s^-1), w = width of the cell (centimeters), 2 X0= amplitude of the moving stage (centimeters), 2 eta = maximum amplitude of sloshing averaged over x (centimeters), H = water depth (centimeters), 2etamax = maximum amplitude of sloshing (centimeters)
