Abstract:

This dataset contains a video of filamentous Escherichia coli cells in tapered capillaries. The diameter of the capillaries decreased from 700 um to 4um and had a mean body length of 27.8 um +/- 11.9 um. Bacteria stalled by counter-current flow at a critical diameter of the capillary. Purpose:

To determine how the motility of filamentous cells inside tapered capillaries could affect bacterial migration in the presence of convective flow.

Data Parameters and Units:

Video of a tapered capillary tube with clear water flowing at a given rate from a narrow to a widening diameter. The bacterial Rheotaxis could swim against the current up to but not beyond a critical diameter as the tube narrows. The critical diameter is dependent on the water flow rate.
