Abstract:

This dataset reports electrophoretic mobility of poly(2-methyl-2-acrylamidopropanesulfonate-co-acrylic acid) in a series of combined sodium ion and unbound calcium solutions at pH 8 and fixed Na+/Ca2+ mole ratio = 7.6. Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) was preformed to measure hydrodynamic diameter of (3-aminopropyl)-triethoxysilane (APTES) iron oxide (IO) nanoparticles (NPs) in deionized water and poly(2-methyl-2-acrylamidopropanesulfonate-co-acrylic acid) grafted IO NPs in deionized water and American Petroleum Institute (API) brine. DLS results are presented as percent volume by hydrodynamic diameter. The magnetization curve data measured through Superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) for APTES IP NPs before and after grafting with poly(2-methyl-2-acrylamidopropanesulfonate-co-acrylic acid) are reported. Electrophoretic mobility and ionic strength data for polyelectrolyte-coated NPs including PMAA-stabilized latex reported in Fritz G; Schadler, V.; Willenbacher, N.; Wagner, N. J. Langmuir 2002 and PSS-coated iron NPs in N.; Kim, H. J.; Phenrat, T.; Matyjaszewski, K.; Tilton, R. D.; Lowry, G. V. Environ. Sci. Purpose:

Magnetic nanoparticles that can be transported in subsurface reservoirs at high salinities and temperatures are expected to have a major impact on enhanced oil recovery, carbon dioxide sequestration, and electromagnetic imaging. The methodology of steric stabilization of iron oxide (IO) nanoparticles (NPs) grafted with polymer is presented and may be readily adapted to stabilize a variety of other functional inorganic and organic NPs at high salinities and temperatures.
