Abstract:

Calculations of van der Waals energy of interaction for two semi-infinite dissimilar solids interacting across two immiscible liquids. The energy of interaction can be attractive or repulsive depending upon the Hamaker constants of the liquids compared to those for the solids. This dataset reports Hamaker constants (A).

Purpose:

This research was conducted to describe a strategy for creating a particle-stabilized emulsion.

Methods:

Emulsions were prepared by mixing a hydrophobic particle suspension in water with a hydrophobic particle suspension in toluene. Different volume ratios of suspensions were vortexed at 1200 RPM for 1 minute to form emulsions. Locus of van der Waals energy/area (U) equal to zero, of a particle (hydrophobic silica, hydrophobic iron oxide) in a medium (Water, toluene, water +80% w/w polyethylene glycol (PEG 200), toluene +90% w/w p-xylene) as the two immiscible media where phi=0 and phi=1.hydrophobically modified silica particles (approx. 80 nm). carbon black suspension in water (pH 7.5), diameter approx. 120 nm. iron oxide particles (approx. 10nm) Hydrophilic particles were suspended in pure water and hydrophobic particles were suspended in pure toluene at either 0.015% w/w or 0.035% w/w.
