Abstract:

This dataset reports the results of a laboratory study examining the number, size, and frequency of oil droplets ingested and excreted by Noctiluca scintillans and Gyrodinium spirale. Each species was incubated with either crude oil (1 ul/L), crude oil treated with dispersant (1 ul/L) or no crude oil. These treatments were run both with and without the supplement of phytoplankton as a food source.

Purpose:

To find evidence of ingestion and defecation of physically or chemically dispersed crude oil droplets (1–86 mmin diameter) by heterotrophic dinoflagellates, major components of marine planktonic food webs.

Data Parameters and Units:

The dataset contains 7 files and 1 folder: G. Spirale values per cell.csv and Noctiluca values per cell.csv These two files contain oil volume and droplet number per cell for G. spirale and N. scintillans respectively for each of four treatments. Column 1: Treatment (treatment name) Column 2: Replicates (treatment replicate) Column 3: vol.um3 (volume of oil per cell in μm^3) Column 4: Oil Count (number of droplets per cell) G. Spirale oil droplet diameter.csv and Noctiluca oil droplet diameter.csv These two files contain diameter of oil droplets found in G. spirale and N. scintillans cells respectively. The column titled “Label” is the image name. Usually each image only had one cell. So, for most cases, values under Label identify cells. Multiple entries identify different oil droplets within that cell, e.g., 002A.tif for G.spirale is found in 3 rows. However, in a few cases, there were more than one cell per image. In these cases, the column ‘cell’ differentiates multiple cells within one image.
