Abstract:

The encounter rate of bacteria to a rising droplet is studied here. The dataset contains the laboratory measurements of motile bacteria, Pseudomonas (P62), and passive polystyrene particles (1um) encountering an oil droplet pinned in a microfluidic channel. Files included are raw and processed image sequences of experiments, 3D particle positions, particle trajectories, and velocity fields. Three oil droplet sizes are measured. Each droplet and particle suspensions are subject to seven relative flow velocities which emulates the different advection or rising velocity.

Purpose:

Examine the encounter rate of particle/bacteria to a rising oil droplet and to obtain the scaling law for modeling. Further, we exam the effect of motility of bacteria on the encounter rate.

Data Parameters and Units:

Raw Data is in series of video images in TIFF format. The bacteria and particle positions of each video frame and the position of the droplet were extracted and stored in a matlab binary format. The flow velocity and particle trajectories are stored in a matlab binary format The encounter rates are plotted in Tecplot format.

Methods:

Video images are obtained using TiE microscope and a high speed camera. Data Analysis are performed using in-house developed matlab code.

Instruments:

Micrograph is obtained using Ti2000 Nikon Microscope with 20X and 40X Superplan ELWD objectives.
