Abstract:

This dataset includes a particle image velocimetry (mPIV) video of an adult copepod, Temora turbinata. The video demonstrates a new method for using mPIV utilizing brightfield illumination and has been pre-processed and inverted.

Purpose:

To research a new method for quantifying flows around free-swimming zooplankton.

Data Parameters and Units:

Particle image velocimetry (mPIV) video of an adult copepod, Temora turbinata. Video has been pre-processed and inverted.

Methods:

Adult copepods collected in surface waters of Port Aransas, Texas (27.838127,-97.051420). Filming vessels: 1 mm thick optical glass 40 x 40 x 40. Seeding particles: Isochrysis galbana and Nannochloropsis oculata. Approximately 30,000-50,000 cells ml-1 at 40X and 2000-5000 cells ml-1 at 10X. Adult copepods approximately 1 mm in length were filmed 10mm from wall surface. At speeds filmed, Reynolds number: 8; Measurement plane width (MPW): 37.4 μm.

Instruments:

Photron (model SA3) high-speed camera. Fisher Scientific 150W fiber optic illuminator. Lenses: A Nikon E Plan 10/0.25 160/0 LWD 10X Objective and a Nikon BD Plan 40/0.5 210/0 ELWD 40X microscope objective. Photron FPV software. ImageJ (v1.48c) software used for inversion and processing of images.
