Abstract:
This dataset contains mortality of adult and larval stage gelatinous zooplankton exposed to various concentrations of crude oil emulsions. Specifically, adult stages of scyphozoans, Pelagia noctiluca and Aurelia aurita, ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi, Ephyra larvae of Aurelia aurita, and cydippid larvae of Mnemiopsis leidyi. Bioaccumulation of sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were also analyzed for adult stages of Aurelia aurita and Mnemiopsis leidyi.
Data Parameters and Units:
Bioaccumulation in gelatinous zoo.xlsx – Bioaccumulation in adult Aurelia aurita and Mnemiopsis leidyi. Sample (initial, control A, B, C, exp1A, B, C), total concentration of PAHs (ng/g), concentration of individual PAHs [Naphthalene, Acenaphthylene, Acenaphthene (Ace), Fluorene, Phenanthrene, Anthracene, Fluoranthene, Pyrene, Benzo[a]anthracene, Chrysene, Benzo[b]fluoranthene, Benzo[k,j]fluoranthene, Benzo[a]pyrene, Indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene, Dibenzo[a,h]anthracene, Benzo[ghi]perylene] (ng/g). Bioaccumulation factor calculated: BAF=[PAH]zoo x 1000/[PAH]water. BAF: Bioaccumulation factor, [PAH]zoo: concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in exposed gelatinous zooplankton after subtracting concentration of PAHs in control treatment (ng g-1), [PAH]water: concentration of PAHs in seawater (ng L-1). Ctenophore larvae_crude oil exposure exp.xlsx – Morality of ctenophore larvae (Mnemiopsis leidyi) exposed to various concentrations of crude oil emulsions (0, 1, 5, 10, 25 uL L-1). Replicate A, B), Day (1-6), number alive, number dead, % survival, SD: standard deviation, MORT: mortality (%). Mortality calculated: M = 100 * Cb/LC50b +Cb. M: mortality (%), C: crude oil concentration (uL L-1), LC50: median lethal concentration, b: slope factor. Ephyra_Aurelia_crude oil exposure exp.xlsx – Mortality of larval developmental stages of Aurelia aurita exposed to various concentrations of crude oil emulsions (0, 0.1, 1, 10 uL L-1). Replicate (A, B), Day (1,2, 3), number alive, number dead, % survival, SD: standard deviation, MORT: mortality (%). Mortality calculated: M = 100 * Cb/LC50b +Cb. M: mortality (%), C: crude oil concentration (uL L-1), LC50: median lethal concentration, b: slope factor. Size of gelatinous experimental organims.xlsx - Measurements of gelatinous zooplankton: Ephyras: 25 units, 10 measured (um); ctenophore larvae, Aurelia aurita adults, ctenophore adults, Pelagia noctiluca measurements in cm.
Methods:
Specimen collection: Pelagia noctiluca: northern Gulf of Mexico (28° 24′ 36″N 90°512′36″W) by slow-speed plankton tows (10m min-1) from 50m bottom depth to the surface using a plankton net (50 cm diameter, 150um-mesh). Adult stages of Aurelia aurita and Mnemiopsis leidyi: Aransas Bay, TX (28° 05′ 01″N 96°59′30″W); adult stages of A. aurita collected with plastic bucket; adult stages of M. Leidyi collected by low speed horizontal tow (similar plankton net as with P. noctiluca). Larval developmental stages of Aurelia aurita and Mnemiopsis leidyi: Aransas Ship Channel, Port Aransas, TX (27°49′39″N 97°4′20″W) collected by tidal current flows through a microplankton net (50um mesh, 36 cm diameter) fixed to a pier. Crude oil emulsions: Louisiana Sweet crude oil provided by BP added to 0.2 um filtered seawater and stirred (900 rpm for 5 minutes). Emulsions added to experimental treatments at concentrations from 0.1 to 40 uL L-1). Chemical analysis: Sixteen PAHs analyzed: Naphthalene, Acenaphthylene, Acenaphthene (Ace), Fluorene, Phenanthrene, Anthracene, Fluoranthene, Pyrene, Benzo[a]anthracene, Chrysene, Benzo[b]fluoranthene, Benzo[k,j]fluoranthene, Benzo[a]pyrene, Indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene, Dibenzo[a,h]anthracene, and Benzo[ghi]perylene. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) used for analysis.
