Abstract:

Aqueous geochemical parameters are reported from Louisiana marsh water. Raw water samples were collected and analyzed as a component of a longitudinal study, from June 2012 to October 2014.

Purpose:

To report the major cation and anion chemistry of marsh surface water in June 2012, October 2012, May 2013, October 2013, May 2014 and October 2014.

Methods:

Surface water samples from marshes were collected biannually from June 2012 to October 2014. One-liter grab samples were collected at each field site, approximately 3-5 meters offshore from the marsh edge. Samples were collected and stored in certified HDPE bottles, transported on ice until frozen at -20 degrees C in the laboratory. For laboratory sample processing, samples were thawed, sonicated in the collection bottles for 10 minutes, and filtered through 0.22 um PES Sterivex filters (EMD Millipore Cat. No.: SVGP01050) into prepared HDPE bottles for cation and anion measurements. Cation samples were preserved by acidification with nitric acid. Anions were not chemically preserved. Cation and anion bottles were stored at 4 degrees C until measurements were done using ion chromatographs. Field data measured at the time of sample collection are reported separately as follow: R1.x139.143:0011, R1.x139.143:0012, R1.x139.143:0013, R1.x139.143:0015, R1.x139.143:0035 and R1.x139.143:0043. Bacterial community data retrieved from DNA isolated from the water filters are reported separately for June and October 2012 sample collections, R1.x139.143:0024 and R1.x139.143:0040, respectively.

Instruments:

Concentrations of major cations were determined on preserved (acidified) filtered samples using a Thermo Scientific ICS-2100 Integrated Reagent-Free ion chromatography system. Concentrations of major anions were determined on unpreserved, filtered samples using a Dionex ICS-2000 ion chromatography system. Cation and anion data were analyzed using Chromeleon software. Cation concentrations were calibrated using a prepared Six Cation Standard (Thermo Scientific Product No.: 040187). Anion concentrations were calibrated using prepared Combined Seven Anion Standard II (Thermo Scientific Product No.: 057590) and Seven Anion Standard (Thermo Scientific Product No: 056933).
