Abstract:

Microbial degradation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in estuarine systems is important to geochemical processes and microbial community function. This dataset includes the results of a laboratory experiment in which batch microcosms of marsh sediments and seawater were enriched with DOM leachate made with marsh grass, Spartina alterniflora. DOM biodegradation was evaluated over a one-month period using fluorescence spectroscopy (R1.x139.143:0022). These data include the results of DNA extracted from batch experiment sediments after one month, followed by tag 454 pyrosequencing of the V1-V3 region of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene.

Purpose:

These data support understanding of sediment microbial community response to influx of labile dissolved organic matter in Louisiana marshes that are known to naturally accumulate and store large quantities of organic carbon in soils.
