Abstract:

This dataset includes mtDNA sequences, accession numbers, and collection information for 11 mitochondrial genomes from 5 florideophycean subclasses in support of a study of red algal phylogenetic relationships and organelle evolution. Nine red algal species were collected from the field and two species obtained from culture collections. Purpose:

The aims of the present work were 1) to elucidate phylogenetic relationships at higher taxonomic levels and identify major evolutionary transitions in the Rhodophyta; 2) to compare the coding sequences (CDSs) content and synteny between the Bangiophyceae and Florideophyceae, and among the five florideophycean subclasses; and 3) to determine the extent of mtDNA gene synteny and loss within the Rhodymeniophycidae.
