Abstract:

This dataset reports latitude, longitude, and sea surface temperature data collected from eight iSPHERE drifters. Drifters were deployed April 16, 2014 in the Florida Straits, approximately 25 km south of Western Florida Keys.

Purpose:

To collect location and sea surface temperature measurements from iSPHERE drifters as they follow natural circulation patterns.

Year; Month; Day; Hour; Minute; Longitude (decimal degrees); Latitude (decimal degrees); Sea Surface Temperature (degrees Celsius)

Methods:

On 16 April 2014 8 iSPHERE drifters were released in the Florida Straits, approximately 25 km south of western Florida Keys. Deployment 1 released 4 iSPHERES at position 81.84W, 24.40N at 09:00 UTC and Deployment 2 released 4 iSPHERES further east at position 82.09W, 24.39N at 11:00 UTC. In Deployment 1 (D1), unfortunately, one drifter never transmitted and iSPHERE3 and iSPHERE2 were taken by fishermen after two and three days (52.5 and 75 hours). iSPHERE1, however, transmitted for 23 days and provided a useful data set.
