Abstract:

This dataset reports grain size for five sediment samples collected using multicores during the R/V Weatherbird II cruise in the Northern Gulf of Mexico from February 5-8, 2013. Grain sizes are reported as percent of the sample for 47 size classes. The percent mud content for each sample is calculated and samples are classified as mud or sandy mud. Results are reported in triplicate for each sample and the average for each sample is included. Samples were analyzed in the laboratory by laser diffraction.

Purpose:

Grain size data are central for evaluating sediment properties, including permeability, surface area, porosity, and water content. These grain size data were assessed to gain information about the environment sedimenting oil was exposed to.

Data Parameters and Units:

Sample name; measurement date and time = date and time when instrument made measurement; analysis date and time = date and time when instrument analyzed measurement; particle refractive index ; particle absorption index; dispersant name; dispersant refractive index; uniformity = uniformity of grain sizes in sample. The sediment was analyzed for grain size spectrum through standard laser-based particle analysis.
