Abstract:

This dataset contains measurements of mercury bioaccumulation and stable isotopes of Hg, C, N and S in tilefish from the northeastern Gulf of Mexico from 2012-04-03 to 2013-10-13. Tilefish (Lopholatilus chamaleonticeps) samples were collected using fishery-independent longline surveys on the research vessels Weatherbird II (WB-1215 and WB-1307) in April, and October 2012, St. Andrew Bay (SAB-1201) in July 2012, and Apalachee (AP-1307 and AP-1312) from July - October 2013. The dataset contains dates and the locations of sampling sites and includes biometric data such as standard length and body weight of fish and other data obtained from a variety of mass spectrometer analyzers. Instruments:

Inorganic mercury and methyl analysis were performed with a Tekran®2700 system using cold vapor atomic florescence spectrometry. A multi-collector ICP-MS (ThermoFinningan® Neptune) attached to a cold vapor generator (CETAC® HGX-200) was used for mercury isotope analysis. Thermo Fischer Scientific Delta Plus XP Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer linked with a ThermoQuest CE Instrument NC2500 Elemental Analyzer and a Thermo Fisher Scientific Conflo III was used to assess the steady isotopes of Carbon and Nitrogen. A mass spectrometer (DeltaPlusXP, Thermofinnigan) coupled with an elemental analyzer (ECS 4010, Costech Analytical) enabled the measurement of stable isotopes of sulfur.

Error Analysis:

The certified reference materials used for quality control during MMHg and total Hg analysis was Tuna muscle ERM-CE 464 and Dogfish liver NRCC DOLT-4. The limit of quantification was 0.05 and 0.2 ng L^-1^ for MMHg and inorganic Hg respectively.
