Abstract:

High-speed, high-resolution stereoscopic images of bubbles and droplets rising from natural seeps were taken near the seabed at MC118 in April 2015. The images sequences allow the accurate determination of size and position of bubbles and droplets.

Purpose:

The in situ behavior of gas bubbles and oil droplets from natural oil seeps will help scientists understand and better predict the fundamental behavior or petroleum fluids in the ocean environment.

Instruments:

Two Vision Research High-Speed Phantom Miro cameras in master and slave syncing configuration: The camera images are from a stereo camera system - i.e., a pair of cameras. In order to synchronize the images - one camera is designated the Master and the other the Slave. The operator tells the Master when to start to collect images. The Master controls the Slave. The frame rates are classified as slow (24-80 images per second) or fast (100-400Hz). The Master-Slave arrangement keeps each pair of images synchronized. TAMU-fast and TAMU-slow are arbitrary designations. They indicate relatively slower or relatively faster image frame rates. The frame rates are given in the NA056_Samples files. Log sheets were provided by EV Nautlius crew.

The images were taken by a pair of high-speed, high-resolution cameras referred to in the cruise report as TAMU CAMERAS or CAMs. This is the second such activity. See https://data.gulfresearchinitiative.org/data/R1.x137.130:0015/ for similar data collection efforts in 2014.
