Abstract:

This datasets contains laboratory measurements of the spatial distribution of a continuous stream of dense glass beads release from a carriage towed at a constant velocity across a salt-stratified tank. The glass beads were collected in a grid of cells mounted on a bottom sled which was towed along with the source. Particle size and tow speeds were varied. A total of 11 experiments were conducted. This dataset contains tabular, comma delimited ASCII representations of the supporting data supplied along with the paper "Wang, D., Adams, E. E. (2016). Purpose:

The purpose of this experiment was to simulate the behavior of particles of varying size in a buoyant plume as an analog to oil droplets which have been reduced in size by dispersants while rising in a multi-phase plume to better understand the behavior or deep ocean blowouts.

Data Parameters and Units:

percent of total mass of beads collected in each cell of a 18 X 32 array of grid cells.

Methods:

Glass beads were released in a slurry into stratified fluid from an upper towed sled. The negatively buoyant beads were collected in a grid of cells mounted on a lower sled which was towed along with the upper sled. The total mass of beads in each cell were measured and expressed as a percent of the total mass released. Spatial distributions were determined through a knowledge of the spatial dimensions of the receiving grid.
