Abstract:

This dataset contains satellite data, autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) sensor data, and water sample taxonomy used in the observation and interpretation of a Karenia brevis (K. brevis) bloom that occurred off the southwestern coast of Florida from September 2011 until April 2012. Using the combination of satellite data, AUV data, and water sample taxonomy allowed researchers to observe the three-dimensional structure and dynamics of the K. brevis bloom. Purpose:

This dataset was developed to better understand the benefits of integrating multiple data types into the observation and interpretation of harmful algal blooms (HABs).

Data Parameters and Units:

Satellite Data – All satellite data are included in the subfolder named "satellite_data". The format of the file name is: sensor+year+julian_day+time+'.'+resolution+'.'+area+'.PASS.L3D.hdf'; Regarding the sensor, 'A' denotes 'Aqua', 'T' denotes 'Terra', and 'M' denotes 'MERIS'; Cell Count Data – All phytoplankton cell count data are included in the subfolder named "cell_count_data" and are contained in the “cell_count_[YYYYMMDD].txt”: Program Date (YYYY/MM/DD); Time (GMT, two NaN columns); Latitude (decimal degrees); Longitude (decimal degrees); Cell counts (phytoplankton cell counts); USF Glider Data – The glider data collected by the USF glider is stored in the file named “usf_glider_data.txt”: time - glider measurement time in the format of YYYY+julian_day+HHMMSS sat_time - satellite measurement time (NaN); Lat - glider latitude (DD); Lon - glider longitude (DD): depth - glider depth (meters); cond - glider measured conductivity; temp - glider measured sea water temperature (deg C); pres - glider measured pressure (dbar); bb - glider measured particulate backscattering (1/m); chl - glider measured chlorophyll-a fluorescence (mg/m^2); cdom - glider measured CDOM fluorescence; bott - glider measured bottom depth (meters); sal - glider measured salinity (ppt); pitch - glider measured pitch; den - glider measured density (ppm); oxy - glider measured dissolved oxygen (ml/l); ed490 - glider measured downwelling irradiance at 490 nm (uW/cm2/nm); flh - satellite measured normalized fluorescence line height (FLH, mW/cm^2/μm/sr); kd_488_lee - spectral satellite derived diffuse attenuation coefficient for downwelling irradiance at 488 nm using a quasi-analytical algorithm normalized water-leaving radiance at 488 nm (nLw, mW/cm^2/μm/sr); bbp_547 - particulate backscattering coefficient at 547 nm using a quasi-analytical algorithm (1/meters); Wind Data – Wind data for NDBC station VENF1 are provided by NOAA NDBC and are included in the file titled “wind_data.txt”: Date (YYYY MM DD); Time (HH MM); Wind Direction (deg T); Wind Speed (meters/second); GST – gust speed (m/s); WVHT – Wave Height (meters); DPD – Dominant Wave Period (seconds); APD – Average Wvae Period (seconds); MWD – mean wave direction the direction from which the waves at the dominant period DPD are coming (deg T); PRES – Atmospheric Pressure (hPa); ATMP – Air Temperature (deg C); WTMP – Water Temperature (deg C); DEWP – Dewpoint Temperature (deg C); VIS – Station Visibility (nautical miles); Tide – the water level above or below mean lower low water (feet); Satellite Glider Matchup Data — The matchup data between satellite and glider measurement are included in the file named "glider_satellite_matchup.txt". Only data corresponding to the columns named below are used in the manuscriopt available at: http://optics.marine.usf.edu/references/Zhao_redtide_glider_Harmful_Algae_2013.pdf: transect# - transect number; lats - latitude (DD); lons – longitude (DD); img_flh - satellite derived fluorescence line height; img_bbp - satellite derived particulate backscattering at 547 nm using a quasi-analytical algorithm; Transects 6 and 7 corresponding to the transect number 5 and 6 are used in the manuscript.
