Abstract:

A turbulence resolving simulation of a near-field plume is conducted using a nonhydrostatic Navier-Stokes solver (NEK5000). The computation is conducted using a 17th order spatial discretization for numerical accuracy and on about 900 cores of a recent Cray XE6m. The single-phase plume is driven by momentum and buoyancy anomalies at the inlet. Once the plume reaches a steady state through open upper boundary conditions, an injection of a passive tracer is carried out to explore possible mixing characteristics of dispersants. This dataset was created by the Consortium for Advanced Research on Transport of Hydrocarbon in the Environment (CARTHE).

Purpose:

To study the mixing characteristics of an oil-gas mixture entering the ocean at the bottom from a subsurface plume.

Data Parameters and Units:

w0 (injection velocity, m/s); D (pipe diameter, m); Θs (seawater temperature difference, K); ws (m/s); us (m/s); R (radius of cylinder, m); Lz (height of cylinder, m) Velocities, density, and tracer concentration fields.

Methods:

The binary (*.dat) files that comprise this dataset must be read and processed using NEK5000 software. A Cray XE6 (with 960, 2.2 GHz AMD Magny-Cours cores) was used for the simulations. CPU time was approx. 300,000 core hours per simulation.
