Abstract:

This dataset captures data from a long-term ADCP deployment over Jan-Dec 2014, in support of the SCOPE experiment, deployed in 10m water depth at SCOPE station 1 near Santa Rosa Island, Florida. There were 8 ADCP deployments for which files are separated. Parameters measured include U (east velocity), V (north velocity), W (vertical velocity), A (average backscatter), and P (pressure) CARTHE investigators conducted the Surfzone Coastal Oil Pathway Experiment (SCOPE) during the period 2-19 December 2013, focused on measuring the inner-shelf and surf-zone processes responsible for oil transport near Santa Rosa Island, FL. The intensive three-week experiment included a cross-shore array of fixed instruments to measure winds, waves, currents, and water properties from 10m water depth to the shoreline. Lagrangian drifters, dye releases, and moving-vessel measuring platforms were also used. This unique set of observations is valuable both for quantifying nearshore physics and mixing estimates, and for assessing nearshore model forecasts. The observations captured a wide range of wind and wave forcing due to a number of synoptic winter storms that occurred during the experiment.

Purpose:

The long-term stationary array was used to provide a context for the SCOPE experiment in December 2013 by capturing the variability over a year.

Data Parameters and Units:

Parameters measured at 1 HZ sample rate in 0.5m bins and include yearday (in fractions of day) velocities (east, north, vertical) in m/s at a variety of depths between 0.8 m and 10.3 m; average backscatter in counts; pressure in decibars. Parameters are each saved in own file, file naming convention ADCP_JBP_10m_[*]_[syd]_[eyd].txt - [*] = variable name, [syd] = start yearday, [end] = end yearday Variable names - U = east velocity (m/sec) (positive toward magnetic east), V = north velocity (m/sec) (positive toward magnetic north), W = vertical velocity (m/sec), A = average backscatter (counts), P = pressure (decibars) File format - Col 1 = yearday (local time in fractions of day at 1 Hz intervals), Col 2-end - data in each depth bin from bottom moving upward Bin Heights above bed (m) [0.8 1.3 1.8 2.3 2.8 3.3 3.8 4.3 4.8 5.3 5.8 6.3 6.8 7.3 7.8 8.3 8.8 9.3 9.8 10.3]
