Abstract:

Samples were taken in 2013 in the Gulf of Mexico in two areas, one nearshore off Santa Rosa Island, the other in the Straits of Florida. This dataset contains the dates, locations, and CT values, along with the wind speed and wave height and the presence or absence of a slick.

Purpose:

The bacterial abundance was tested to determine the relationship between the presence of surfactant-associated bacteria in the near-surface layer of the ocean and slicks on the sea surface.

Data Parameters and Units:

Date and time (GMT), slick presence (flag), wind speed (m/s), wave height (feet), location (latitude and longitude in decimal degrees), CT value (cycle number)

Methods:

A real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis was used. The abundance was recorded as the cycle number in the PCR run at which each sample crosses a set threshold of fluorescence signal emitted (0.149 ∆normalized reporter (∆Rn)). Fluorescence emitted relates to the amount of amplified PCR product. A lower CT value indicates a higher amount of bacteria relative to a sample with a higher CT value.
