Abstract:

We reproduced the final stage of Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) shear instability at the interface between fluids with large density differences in a laboratory experiment at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (UM RSMAS) Air-Sea Interaction Salt Water Tank (ASIST), coordinated with a Volume of Fluid Large Eddy Simulation. Shadow imaging was used to capture images in a small air-sea tank at ASIST at wind speed corresponding to U10 = 40 ms-1. The grey-scale images included in this dataset shows cases of fresh and salt water and the effect of surfactant. Color intensity can be used to distinguish liquid (black) and air (white).

Purpose:

The dataset was collected to investigate the differences in Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities in freshwater, in saltwater, and in saltwater with surfactants.

Data Parameters and Units:

Folder named ‘Freshwater’: side-view images of the air-sea interface in small ASIST tank containing freshwater, tank size 0.57 m long x 0.27 m wide x 0.35 m high, wind speed U10= 40 ms-1, 1600 x 1200 pixels. The water level was approximately 0.34 m above the bottom of the tank. These are consecutive images with camera shutter speed of 25 Hz, which corresponds to 0.04 s between the images. Folder named ‘Saltwater’: side-view images of the air-sea interface in small ASIST tank containing saltwater, tank size 0.57 m long x 0.27 m wide x 0.35 m high, wind speed U10= 40 ms-1, 1600 x 1200 pixels.
