Abstract:

Absorbance and fluorescence measurements were measured on base-extracted particulate organic matter (BEPOM) to examine particulate organic matter (POM) biogeochemistry in coastal Gulf of Mexico. Samples were collected from three locations off the Louisiana coast, June 22-July 5, 2012.

Purpose:

Using BEPOM optical and chemical measurements to evaluate POM quality in coastal ecosystems improved our understanding of organic matter cycling and potential planktonic sources of CDOM. These data are part of a larger study comparing BEPOM absorbing and fluorescing properties from several coastal envornments including River Estuary in eastern North Carolina and Charleston Harbor in South Carolina.

Data Parameters and Units:

latitude (Lat, decimal degrees); longitude (Lon, decimal degrees); Depth (m); Salinity (PSU); Chlorophyll a concentration (chla, ug L-1); BEPOM absorption (a254, m-1); BEPOM spectral slope (S275-295, nm-1); p (particulate-samples were extracted from GF/F filters); f (filtrate from GF/F filtration); h# (voltage setting); 7o (700 volts); 75 (750 volts); ho (high volts). Raw absorbance data: wavelength (nm); intensity (a.u.). File naming convention for files in eem_RawAbsorbanceData is GoM = Gulf of Mexico, 001-011 = site location and depth code as defined in file RawAbsorbanceData_readme.xls, p = bepom extracted absorbance or f = filtrate dissolved absorbance, h# indicates voltage, q files are scans of 18.2 megaOhm ultrapure water. For BEPOM 'k' files correspond to neutralized NaOH solution which is used as a blank.
