Abstract:

National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) collect data at weather/climate stations, from radars, weather balloons, moored buoys in the ocean, ships, airplanes, satellites, and from computer models. Data provided are for tropical weather events (hurricanes and tropical storms) associated with FEMA-declared disasters in Texas from 2010-2024. NCEI data are provided for coastal NOAA climate divisions in Texas (East 4804, Texas Lower Valley 4810, Texas South Central 4807, Texas Southern 4809, Texas Upper Coast 4808).

Purpose:

Data were collected to use as input for Disaster Impact Estimation Prediction model, to improve accuracy of model estimates of disaster-impacted locations.

Data Parameters and Units:

STATION (unique alphanumeric station code), NAME (text describing station location), LATITUDE (geographic coordinate in decimal degrees), LONGITUDE (geographic coordinate in decimal degrees), ELEVATION (station elevation in ft), DATE (month/day/year), AWND (average daily wind speed, number), PRCP (precipitation, number), TAVG (average of hourly values, number), TMAX (highest hourly temperature, number), TMIN (lowest hourly temperature, number), WSF2 (fastest 2-minute wind speed, number), WSF5 (fastest 5-second wind speed, number)

Methods:

Data were collected from https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/cdo-web/search for the dates associated with the following FEMA-declared disasters: HURRICANE BERYL 2024-07-05T00:00:00.000Z 2024-07-09T00:00:00.000Z HURRICANE LAURA 2020-08-23T00:00:00.000Z 2020-08-27T00:00:00.000Z HURRICANE HARVEY 2017-08-23T00:00:00.000Z 2017-09-15T00:00:00.000Z TROPICAL STORM IMELDA 2019-09-17T00:00:00.000Z 2019-09-23T00:00:00.000Z Geographic scope was limited to coastal NOAA climate divisions in Texas (East 4804, Texas Lower Valley 4810, Texas South Central 4807, Texas Southern 4809, Texas Upper Coast 4808).
