Abstract:

This towed video camera system (C-BASS) video survey was conducted along selected pipelines, unconsolidated bottom (mud/sand) areas, and hard bottom tracts throughout the Gulf of Mexico within 30 to 200 meters of water. Reef fish counts and density estimates corresponding with this visual assessment are stored in the GRIIDC dataset titled “Towed Video (C-BASS) Based Density Estimates for Reef Fishes between 30-200 m of depth along Pipelines, on Unconsolidated Substrates (mud/sand), and hard bottom structures throughout the U.S. Gulf of Mexico." Multibeam bathymetry surfaces used for piloting the system can be found in the GRIID-C dataset "Multibeam Bathymetry of Seafloor along Towed Video (C-BASS) Transects in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico." Concurrently collected environmental data can be found in the GRIID-C dataset "CTD, Fluorometer, and Transmissometer Data collected along Towed Camera (C-BASS) Transect Surveys of Pipelines, Mud/Sand, and Hard Bottom in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico."

Purpose:

These data were collected to analyze for Red Snapper density over pipeline infrastructure and unconsolidated bottom throughout the Gulf of Mexico as part of the Great Red Snapper Count.

Data Parameters and Units:

Video recorded using Point Grey Blackfly (BLFY-PGE-23S6M-C) Monochome, 2.3 MP Digital Camera outfitted with the following Camera Lens: Kowa LM6HC. Continuous imagery is saved continuous, 1-minute segments for easier handling. The typical towed altitude above bottom for the towed camera system was 3 - 5 meters. Timestamps and dates are in UTC.

Methods:

These data were collected during daylight hours and navigation was aided by multibeam bathymetry and concurrently running EK60 sonar. The camera system was kept 2-5 meters above bottom.
