Abstract:
This dataset contains links to near-surface velocities in Mississippi Sound as measured by radial and total vector high-frequency RADAR (HFR) between 2018-01-01 and 2019-12-31. Radial data from the stations at Pass Christian Yacht Club, MS (PCYC, 30.3114N, 89.2447W) and the Silver Slipper Casino, MS (SISL, 30.2392N, 89.4239W) supplement gridded total vector measurements for the Gulf of Mexico region. Spatial resolution is as fine as 1 km, and velocities are representative of the surface 0.3 - 2.5 m of the water column, depending on the radar stations’s operating frequency and structure of the local vertical velocity profile. Data Parameters and Units:
The radial data are served in individual text files archived in hourly intervals. Each contains a header with specifications and a block of data with the format longitude [decimal degrees], latitude [decimal degrees], zonal velocity [cm/s], meridional velocity [cm/s], vector flag [enum], spatial quality [xxx.xxx], temporal quality [xx.xxx], velocity maximum [cm/s], velocity minimum [cm/s], spatial count [enum], temporal count [enum], x distance [km], y distance [km], range [km], bearing [degrees true], velocity [cm/s], direction [degrees true], Spectra.
Each file also includes a block of information on the temporal history of measured amplitudes, phase relationships between the receivers, signal to noise ratios, and noise floors. Other diagnostics are also included for the one-hour time frame.
The total vector data are served in NetCDF format and have the parameters time [seconds since 1970-01-01], latitude [decimal degrees N], longitude [decimal degrees E], u (zonal velocity [m/s]), v (meridional velocity [m/s]), DOPx (longitudinal dilution of precision), DOPy (latitudinal dilution of precision), site_lat [decimal degrees N], site_lon [decimal degrees E], site_code (contributing site codes), site_netCode (contributing site network affiliation code), and procParams (seven processing parameters).
