Abstract:

Seismic reflection profiles were collected with vessel towed frequency modulated (CHIRP) acoustic source (2-12 kHz) and hydrophone receiver array. Profiles were collected inside the Mississippi Sound between Point Clear, MS, and Gulfport Harbor, MS. Data were recorded in the open-source SEGY file format with integrated navigation data. The data were collected on the R/V Sound Surveyor during the following periods: 2018-06-12 to 2018-06-15, 2018-08-16 to 2018-08-18, and 2018-11-07 to 2018-11-08. Collected profile data were analyzed to trace the unconformable marine isotope stage (MIS) 2 flooding surface between deposited Pleistocene and Holocene sediments in the study area. The resulting data were used to interpret the location of paleo-drainage networks and evaluate their correlation with observed submarine groundwater transport and discharge patterns.

Purpose:

The data were acquired in order to characterize the shallow stratigraphy in the study area. These data were used to understand how variability in subsurface geology controls the location of nutrients, pollutants, and pathogen input into the Mississippi Sound by groundwater discharge.

Data Parameters and Units:

Acoustic Reflectivity [db], Acoustic Travel Time [s], Latitude (seconds of arc*100], Longitude [seconds of arc*100].

Methods:

The data were acquired with an EdgeTech 3100P sub-bottom profiler and SB-216S towfish. The sub-bottom profiler was operated with a modulated frequency range of 2-12 kHz. The sub-bottom profiler was deployed from a small research vessel with a typical acquisition speed of 0.2-0.8 m/s. Data were acquired and recorded in .SGY format with EdgeTech Discover software.
