Abstract:

This experiment was conducted to test a newly-developed instrument for measuring the gaping behaviour of oysters and to observe gaping during spawning. Gaping is the alternate closing and opening of a shell. The dataset consists of values from six oysters which include time, sensor data, and temperature in a CSV data file. Sensor data is the distance between sensor and magnet in mm. Initial readings are of a closed Oyster (Minimum Sensor Magnet Distance). The experiment was carried out at a hatchery in Pass Christian, Mississippi, 2018-09-03 through 2018-09-06. The sensor failed before spawning was induced (those data are available in related dataset MS.x838.000:0004, DOI: 10.7266/8WKRP66V). Data was transmitted over WiFi (transmission rates may vary). Purpose:

Sensor development and the observation of gaping behaviour during spawning.

Data Parameters and Units:

Time since sensor began operating [seconds], oyster gape 1 [mm], oyster gape 2 [mm], oyster gape 3 [mm], oyster gape 4 [mm], oyster gape 5 [mm], oyster gape 6 [mm], temperature [degrees C]. Note that the sensor was restarted during data collection and the timestamp reset each time.

Methods:

A Hall Effect sensor and small magnet were glued to the exterior of the oysters' shells. The distance to the magnet reported by the sensor equals the gape, with the absolute given by subtracting the initial value, which measured the closed shell. An Arduino Nano microcontroller recorded the data at 10Hz and transmitted it at 1 Hz over WiFi to the data server. Transmission rates may have varied due to bandwidth changes.
