Abstract:

This dataset contains oyster gape and temperature measurements obtained from six oysters using a newly-developed sensor and data transmission system. Measurements were obtained at the University of South Mississippi's Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL) in Ocean Springs, MS, from 2018-08-10 through 2018-09-03. The system consists of a Hall Effect sensor and a small magnet affixed to the shells of the oyster; the sensor produces a voltage proportional to the distance to the magnet and thus the gape length after the initial (closed-shell) measurement is subtracted. Purpose:

Testing a newly-developed method to accurately measure and report oyster gape.

Data Parameters and Units:

Time since sensor began operating [seconds], oyster gape 1 [mm], oyster gape 2 [mm], oyster gape 3 [mm], oyster gape 4 [mm], oyster gape 5 [mm], oyster gape 6 [mm], temperature [degrees C]. Note that the sensor was restarted during data collection and the timestamp reset each time.

Methods:

A Hall Effect sensor and small magnet were glued to the exterior of the oysters' shells. The distance to the magnet reported by the sensor equals the gape. An Arduino Nano microcontroller records the data at 10Hz and in this case transmitted it at 1 Hz over WiFi to the data server. Transmission rates may vary due to bandwidth changes. The oysters were provided by GCRL, collected from the Mississippi Gulf region, and were kept in lab tanks in controlled environmental conditions optimized for oyster growth.
