Abstract:

This dataset contains temperature observations and gape measurements obtained from six oysters using a newly-developed sensor and data transmission system. Testing was performed at the University of South Mississippi's Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL) in Ocean Springs, MS, from 2018-07-01 through 2018-08-02. The system consists of a Hall Effect sensor and a small magnet affixed to the shells of the oyster; the sensor produces a voltage proportional to the distance to the magnet and thus the gape length. Purpose:

Testing a newly-developed method to accurately measure and report oyster gape.

Data Parameters and Units:

Time since sensor began operating [seconds], oyster gape 1 [mm], oyster gape 2 [mm], oyster gape 3 [mm], oyster gape 4 [mm], oyster gape 5 [mm], oyster gape 6 [mm]. Note that the sensor was restarted during data collection and the timestamp reset each time.

Methods:

The oysters were provided by GCRL, collected from the Mississippi Gulf region, and were kept in lab tanks in controlled environmental conditions optimized for oyster growth. A Hall Effect sensor and small magnet were glued to the exterior of the oyster's shells. The distance to the magnet reported by the sensor equals the gape. An Arduino Nano microcontroller recorded the data at 10Hz and in this case, transmitted it at 1 Hz over WiFi to a web-server for data logging. Transmission rates may have varied due to bandwidth changes. Initial values measure a closed valve; subtracting these from other measurements gives an absolute gape length. Instruments:

Symmetry Electronics H2425 Hall Effect Sensor. Arduino Nano (Atmega328P processor) microcontroller. Espressif Systems ESP8266 WiFi module.

Error Analysis:

Initial readings give the distance between sensor and magnet when the oyster is closed. This distance may be subtracted from all column values to normalize data to 0 when closed. Negative values could indicate a breakdown in sensor electronics.
