Abstract:
This dataset contains measurements of radium, radon, and nutrients collected in Baffin Bay, Texas from 2020-10-12 to 2022-08-11. These data are radium and radon radio-isotope data of water samples from well water, surface water, and porewater (piezometer extracted water) used to determine groundwater discharge rates from the coast to Baffin Bay. Including nutrient concentrations of nitrate (NO3-), nitrite (NO2-), ammonium (NH4+), phosphate (PO43-) and dissolved silica. Samples were collected from wells placed in the Baffin Bay watershed and surface and pore water from along the coast and in the Bay itself. Wells were purged and then sampled according to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards, and surface water was collected from 10cm below the surface of the water, porewater was collected using a piezometer sunk into the sediment and pumped with a small pump.

Methods:
Groundwater, porewater, and surface water samples were collected in November 2020, January 2021, June 2021, July 2021, October 2021, January 2022, March 2022 and July 2022. Field parameters, which were collected before sampling, including salinity, dissolved oxygen (DO), pH and specific conductivity, were measured using a multi-probe YSI ProDSS. Groundwater was sampled at the wellhead using a peristaltic pump after purging three well volumes and after field parameters stabilized. Surface water samples were collected with a Van Dorn bottle deployed to the desired depth and given a few minutes for circulation according to standard operating procedure. Porewater was sampled, from 0.3-1.6 m below the sediment-water interface with a push-piezometer sampler attached to a peristaltic pump, after stabilization of field parameters. All water samples, collected in 1-liter high density polyethylene (HPDE) bottles previously acid-washed with 20% hydrochloride acid and rinsed with 18.2 MΩ cm water and finally triple rinsed with sample water, were placed in ice until transported back to the lab and filtered through 0.2 µm pore-sized polycarbonate membranes within 24-48 hours. Samples were then frozen until analysis.
