Abstract:

After satellite tagging oceanic stage Kemp’s ridley (Lepidochelys kempii) and green turtles (Chelonia mydas) in the northern and eastern Gulf of Mexico, habitat use was assessed by evaluating number of tracked segments, current direction and standard deviation, swimming direction and standard deviation, and swimming speed in 2º x 2º location bins.

Purpose:

To assess how sea turtles are using habitat, the uncertainty associated with that use, and estimate how movements are environmentally driven versus individually-based.

Data Parameters and Units:

Each file contains a 2 x 2 degrees matrix from 21 to 37°N and 69.5 to 95.5°W with the average or standard deviation of number of tracked segments (filename “SampleSize”), current direction in degrees (filename “CurrentDir”) and standard deviation (filename “CurrentDir_std”), swimming direction in degrees (filename “SwimDir”) and standard deviation (filename “SwimDir_std”), swimming speed in m/sec (filename “SwimSpeed”) and standard deviation (filename “SwimSpeed_std”) for Kemp’s ridley (filename “LK”), green turtles (filename “CM”) and oceanographic drifters (filename “Drifters”). The averaging time frame was 7/18/2012 - 6/27/2014 for green turtles, 8/13/2011 - 8/14/2014 for Kemp’s ridley sea turtles, and 8/13/2011 - 8/18/2014 for drifters.
