Abstract:

This dataset contains maps of probability of presence for the zooplankton and phytoplankton groups represented in the ecosystem model OSMOSE-WFS, for the different months of the year. Maps of probability of presence for the zooplankton group were produced from SEAPODYM data for the period 2000-present (which we requested to Patrick Lehodey and Beatriz Calmettes, Collecte Localisation Satellites, France, in October 2016). The maps of probability of presence for the phytoplankton group were produced from SeaWiFS chlorophyll-a concentration data for the period 2005-2009 (downloaded from: http://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov/SeaWiFS/). The maps of probability of presence provided here are not for specific years, but rather long-term distribution maps for the period 2005-2009.

Purpose:

The purpose of this dataset is to have a means to allocate the total biomass of the zooplankton and phytoplankton groups over space in the OSMOSE-WFS ecoystem model, for the different months of the year.

Methods:

Chlorophyll a concentration in the West Florida Shelf is an accepted proxy for phytoplankton biomass in this region. Therefore, we produced monthly distribution maps for phytoplankton for the OSMOSE-WFS model using monthly maps of chlorophyll a concentration. First, we generated monthly maps of chlorophyll a concentration in the region covered by the OSMOSE-WFS model from SeaWiFS (Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor) data for the period 2005-2009. Then, to obtain estimates of probability of presence for phytoplankton for the OSMOSE-WFS model for the different months of the year, we rescaled chlorophyll a concentration estimates so that their sum across OSMOSE-WFS grid cells is 1.0. We relied on biomass estimates from the SEAPODYM ocean model to produce distribution maps for zooplankton for the OSMOSE-WFS model. First, we generated monthly maps of zooplankton biomass in the region covered by the OSMOSE-WFS model from weekly SEAPODYM zooplankton biomass estimates for the period 2005-2009 (provided by Patrick Lehodey and Beatriz Calmettes, Collecte Localisation Satellites, France). Then, to obtain estimates of probability of presence for zooplankton for the OSMOSE-WFS model for the different months of the year, we rescaled SEAPODYM zooplankton biomass estimates so that their sum across OSMOSE-WFS grid cells is 1.0.
