Abstract:

This dataset contains mitochondrial gene identifications of fish eggs obtained from a 2012 NOAA SEAMAP cruise using a Multiple Opening/Closing Net and Environmental Sensing System at varying depths within the West Florida Shelf in the Gulf of Mexico.

Purpose:

This data was collected to identify fish eggs at various depths using the mitochondrial COI gene.

Methods:

The NOAA Southeast Area Monitoring and Assessment Program (SEAMAP) collected ichthyoplankton samples between February 15-24, 2012 on the West Florida Shelf as part of a fishery-independent survey aboard the NOAA Ship Oregon II. A Multiple Opening/Closing Net and Environmental Sensing System (MOCNESS) outfitted with 0.505mm mesh nets was deployed at six depths within five stations. Eggs were picked under a dark field dissecting microscope. Eggs from each depth/site were processed using the Hotshot method mentioned, in Kerr et al. 2020. DNA barcoding was completed using the cytochrome c oxidase 1 gene (COI). Identification were made using the Barcode of Life Database (BOLD; http://www.boldsystems.org/) and National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI Database; https://blast.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Blast.cgi).
