Abstract:

Growth increments from analysis of otoliths was compared to expected distributions to identify fast and slow-growing periods within the lives of individual fish. Specimens for this task originated from SEAMAP groundfish trawl surveys on the WFS, private fishing vessels, and Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) fishery-independent monitoring collections in nearshore areas along the west coast of Florida. Growth increments from weighed, sectioned, and polished otoliths (one otolith per individual) were measured using a software/digital-camera package. The growth increment dataset consists of a the SEAMAP or FWC sample identifier code (where applicable, to relate back to the collection source data), date of collection, latitude and longitude of collection (decimal degrees), a unique specimen ID code, species name, fish length (mm TL), increment number, and otolith increment size (mm).

Purpose:

Analysis of growth increments using otoliths will help identify fast and slow-growing periods in the lives of individual fish.

Data Parameters and Units:

The SHELF fish otolith dataset includes a collection number for linking back to original FIM or SEAMAP sample; date the fish was collected; latitude and longitude (decimal degrees), sample region, scientific name, fish standard length (SL, mm), fish fork length (FL, mm), fish total length (TL, mm), fish total weight in grams (TotWt_g), fish gutted weight (GWt_g, grams), fish liver weight (LiverWt_g), fish sex, otolith weight (OtoWt_g), number of annuli, and annuli distance from center (mm)

Methods:

MZ12 camera attached to a stereo microscope with an external light source. Image Pro software was used to measure each annulus. Age and measurement data were recorded directly into MS Excel from Image Pro software.
