Abstract:

The living shorelines suitability model (LSSM) we are developing with this project will be a geospatial model to delineate preferred alternatives (nature-based solutions) to erosion control in the Pointe-au-Chien, LA study area. The LSSM's primary purpose is to encourage and expand the use of living shoreline treatments to counter shoreline erosion in the area. It will be used to help determine the most suitable shorelines to use “living shoreline” designs to control coastal erosion in selected areas determined through input provided by the Pointe-au-Chien Indian Tribe and its external partners. Geospatial datasets used as input into the model will include representing features such as: Coastal land use, bathymetry, bank height, offshore structures, submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) presence, roads, canals, cultural sites, terraces, sea-level rise, subsidence, historical land loss, traditional ecological knowledge (TEK), etc. The initial LSSM is being developed Spring 2024 to test before working to include TEK-based factors and priorities that will emerge through planned workshops with Tribe members through fall of 2024. We estimate the LSSM will be complete by the winter 2024-2025 timeframe.
